In the early 1800s, Niceville was a small town in north-central Florida. It lay at the junction of two major roadways, one linking Jacksonville with Tampa and St. Petersburg, and the other connecting Tallahassee with Gainesville and Mobile. The area was also rich in natural resources, including cotton, sugar cane, and timber. As trade increased along these routes, so did gun ownership. By 1851, there were over 100 guns registered in Niceville. Most of these were rifles or shotguns used for hunting hogs or deer. However, not all residents had access to firearms. There were a few people who owned handguns for protection purposes only. Gunsight development began in earnest in this time period as guns became more accurate and efficient than earlier muzzle loading weapons. Gunmakers realized that sights could be attached to bullets to improve accuracy when firing from a moving vehicle or during battle. By 1872, Niceville had opened its first gunsmith shop providing target practice for local farmers and hunters as well as selling firearms to those living beyond the town limits. Many Englishmen settled around Niceville during this time frame while working on plantations near Pensacola Bayou; they brought their improvements back with them when they returned home in search of new opportunities and new homes (Ferguson). The heyday of gun sight development ended around 1915 however due to increasing rifle barrel fatigue concerns which led to greater adoption of breechloading rifles instead (Moses).

The area that is now Niceville was first occupied by Native American tribes such as the Seminole and Tequesta. A fortification called Fort Brooke was built in 1813 by Captain James Cook to protect Tampa Bay from possible attack by Spanish warships during his visit to Florida (which he erroneously called Cuba). The fortifications were abandoned after the war ended but were rediscovered in 1865 while construction began on what would become Tampa Bay Park (now Hwy 1). When it opened in 1871, Fort Brooke served as Tampa's military garrison until it was replaced by Hillsborough County Courthouse in 1907; since then, only occasional visits have been made to the fortifications (the last being in 1967). In 1892, J.W. Nice & Wm Hogg started a small farm out near today's intersection of US-1/SR-220 & SR-401 which they named "NICEVILLE." niceville grew rapidly due to their natural resources and agriculture industry; By 1930 it had a population of over 100 people
In 1868, a group of men from Niceville bought 1,000 acres of land on the St. Johns River in what is now Jacksonville. The town was founded as a post office and trading center for the area. The first school was built in 1870, and by 1885, it had become an academy. In 1912, the town became a city when it annexed nearby Plantation and East Plantation townships.
