The first recorded mention of Niceville was in 1836 when James A. Fenton wrote about "a place called Nocetown" on his trip from St. Augustine to Fernandina Beach. The name means "place where there are no Indians." In 1848, J. Denny and Wm. Hays established a trading post called Nocetown on the east bank of the St Johns River just south of what is now downtown Niceville. In 1855, Captain John Moulton landed at Nocetown with troops during the Seminole Wars and built Fort Moultrie here as part of his military campaign against Seminoles who had settled in Duval County since 1763 (the Treaty of Cairo ended the war).Moultrie's outpost served as a base for harassment operations against Seminole Indians living northeast of Tampa until 1898 when it was abandoned by Ulysses S. Grant's forces in order to prevent their expansion into Spanish Florida following the end of Spain's rule over Cuba and Puerto Rico
