On October 14th 1893, two days after Christmas eve when workers at an American sugar refiner located on Independence Avenue near today's intersection with US Highway 17 were finishing up their shift (some said they used candles to ceremonial lighting), four gunmen walked into the refinery with shotguns and proceeded to rob everyone inside before fleeing on horseback into Mexico Territory where they initially planned to hide until new supplies arrived from Cuba. The town quickly became a thriving community with its own school, church and post office. By 1847, Niceville had 4 churches and over 50 residents. In 1865, when Jacksonville was founded as a port on the St. Johns River, Niceville became an important commercial center and saw growth in trade with the mainland United States as well as Europe. By 1901, there were only 10 residents living in Niceville but it continued to be an important local commerce center until it closed down in 2003 due to budget cuts.
