New Smyrna Beach was founded by the Spanish in 1565 as a trading post on the barrier island of St. Augustine, Florida. The name, meaning "new town," may be inspired by the fact that the area had only been explored and settled sporadically since before European arrival. In 1795, Spain ceded New Smyrna Beach to England as part of a peace treaty after defeat in the War of Jenkins' Ear. English settlers here began developing the beachfront property into what is now called New Smyrna Beach. In 1868, General John Ponce de Leon discovered new land west of St. Augustine and named it Santa Fe Island after his patron saint. After Spain acquired this land from England in 1868, it renamed Santa Fe Island New Smyrna Beach for its new citizens and their efforts to promote settlement on this new land. By 1907, more than half a million people lived in New Smyrna Beach—more than any other city or town in Florida—making it one of Florida's most populous coastal towns at that time. The first hotel opened in downtown New Smyrna Beach in 1909 and quickly became popular with locals and visitors alike because it offered good food, entertainment, gambling opportunities and much-needed emergency services during hurricanes such as Hurricane Andrew (1992) or Hurricane Floyd (1999). The Hotel Del Monte also played an important role during World War II when Naval Air Station Cape Canaveral was located nearby; residents helped provide vital supplies to servicemen stationed there during war time. The Wilmington News Journal reported on October 10th 1950 that "a group of boys from Indian River High School are planning to start a business selling ice cream from their KRON truck parked near Main Street." America's first soft serve ice cream store opened at 825 Broadwalk Drive just down the street from what is now known as Olde Swann’s restaurant on October 10th 1950 - making history as America's first commercially successful soft serve ice cream store!
