The name "New Smyrna Beach" comes from the historic beach community of similar name in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The first European to sight this area was Giovanni da Verrazzano on November 15, 1497 when he sailed along theFlorida coast and named it Santa Cruz de Verrazano after his father-in-law's home village near Ventimiglia. In 1795 Spanish Captain José Francisco de Miranda y Costilla visited this area and named it La Plata. When Spain ceded Florida to United States in 1821, La Plata became part of Tampa Bay and New Smyrna Beach became part of Volusia County. In 1892 the old Fort Meyers (now Fort De Soto) was abandoned and all its supplies destroyed by a storm during Seminole Wars; many soldiers had died there at that time trying to hold off an estimated 10,000 Native Americans who had invaded fromSouthwest Georgia and Alabama. A new fort was built just south of present day Main Street with artillery pieces installed in 1898; however little use was ever made of it because the area around it grew too swampy for settlement. The fort later burned down in a storm on May 1st 1899 while under construction by military engineers opposite UF campus. It wasn’t until 1915 when Lt. John Fenton developed plans for developing what would become known as “Fort Myers” that anything began to happen hereabouts except for periodic visitors from Gainesville or Jacksonville – people looking for smugglers operating out of nearby Everglades National Park or smuggling operations taking place along US 6 between Ft Pierce and Daytona Beach.). In 1925 a small post office was established at N’Smyrna with mail being sent both ways only once per week due to high rates charged by local carriers.; One result of these high postage rates was that much mail never reached its destination because residents either left their Peninsula postal addresses unaddressed or used other aliases when mailing letters home.(see also: stamps issue dated 1912) .At some point before 1966 there were no more than five houses remaining on Main Street which has since been replaced by roadsides parks full of palm trees providing privacy from motoristsseizing adjacent beaches;N'Smyrna's main shopping center opened up about 1985). Daytime activities here consisted mostlyof swimming (and sometimes sunbathing), fishing (good catches can be found right off shore), visiting friends ashore orBoating trips taken during low tide). New Smyrna Beach, Florida is a small town located on the Gulf of Mexico in Alachua County, Florida. The population was 9,691 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now New Smyrna Beach were Native American traders who came to this area in the late 1800s looking for new land to sell. In 1905, a group of businessmen from St. Augustine decided to build an artificial island in the gulf and name it after their business partner, George Washington Bainbridge Sr., who had died that year. The city was incorporated on December 13, 1907. New Smyrna Beach enjoyed a brief period of growth during World War II when thousands of soldiers visited for military liberty and shopping at local businesses such as Sears Roebuck and JCPenney. However, by 1946 most businesses had closed or been replaced by more modern stores due to economic factors such as oil production declines in the Gulf region and competition from nearby Jacksonville. Afterward, New Smyrna's heyday slowly faded until it regained some popularity beginning in the early 1990s with development projects like Ocean Drive which improved transportation access and brought jobs ashore while also creating new residential areas on mainland properties along Marine Drive which became known as Old Town New Smyrna Beach because it predated much of what is now downtown). In recent years there has been renewed interest throughout the community with attempts by developers to redevelop parts of Old Town into mixed-use neighborhoods with commercial/residential space overlooking either side of Seawall Boulevard; however these efforts have not yet borne fruit due largely to lack of support from city leaders within Mayor Pam Ivey's administration who favor more traditional redevelopment schemes instead.
