During World War IINew Smyrna Beach was an important Naval Base serving as an airfield for American forces during the Pacific theater; it also produced munitions for use in Europe during that war. After the war ended, many businesses closed but some continued to operate until 1971 when they were taken over by Specialty Paper Products company which continued until 1984 when it merged with Dow Chemical Company creating Dow Agrochemicals Incorporated (DOW) parent company today). On December 15th 1971 local citizens replaced their city commissioners with elected officials charged with developing community policies and managing resources such as water supply and waste management; this new government lasted until May 5th 1984 when all offices were disbanded effective immediately due to budget cuts set by then-Governor Lawton Chiles following long term trends within state government at that time.
