New Smyrna Beach, Florida is a town located in Duval County, Florida. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first permanent settlement in present-day New Smyrna Beach was made by freed slaves in 1845. The town was founded on October 2, 1846 by Welshmen who had come to Tampa Bay to find work during the American Civil War. When war ended and new opportunities opened up for them, many of these Welshmen returned home and founded New Smyrna Beach as their new home. The town center was developed around a wharf on which various businesses built dockside warehouses that served as homes for their employees and stored goods until delivery or storage could be made to customers. By 1900, most of the buildings around the wharf were gone, replaced by brick storefronts with metal balconies that exposed wooden decks above the waterline. In 1898 an influx of Irish immigrants led to what is now known as Irishtown on Main Street between First and Second Streets due to fears that they would be deported if they didn't leave Ireland permanently. This prompted developers to build several blocks full ofIrishtown-style houses from 1899-1902., making it one of the earliest examples of suburban development in Duval County. During World War II, thousands of Floridians enlisted in service and many men lived and worked near Naval Station Mayport within walking distance of downtown New Smyrna Beach where they could enlist or buy food and munitions while awaiting shipment out to battle overseas. The station operated until 1945 when it closed because so much naval activity took place nearby that it no longer existed as an active site for military operations. The smell of saltwater reached New Smyrna Beach well before any ships arrived with passengers disembarking at Pier 1 (now called Pier 22) on Fort Pickett Boulevard next door during dayslong sailings from TampaBay beginning on December 12th 1795 with Captain John D’Urville's schooner "Higgins" commanded by Captains Isaac Isaacs & Ebenezer Skinner . . . Over time this custom evolved into landing boats going ashore especially when steamers became too slow or dangerous sailing through rough seas & today's Landing Craft Dock (LCD) can still be seen approximately 2 blocks west Of City Hall
