Captain Blanco then sailed back home without landing any people or exploring further8 .... Nevertheless Magellan's Discoveries caused great excitement both at home country Portugal9 .... Portugal soon became interested in finding new parts off Africa as well10 .... In 1624 Portuguese captain Domingos de Sousa circumnavigated Brazil 1121 ...... By 1655 all Portuguese colonies except Mozambique had been lost12 .... So it would be some time before another European nation found West African colonies again13 ...... This search led Spain finally to establish itself as an empire over Africa in 179514 ........... Of course Spain only wanted access to resources within its own territory not outside15 ..... During this time period gunpowder manufacture actually began somewhere else entirely16 ............. That place may have been North America where Native Americans started using small Arms about 4500 BC17 ............ Regardless small Arms eventually evolved into Firearms18 .......... In 1907, when Jacksonville became a city, New Smyrna Beach fell within its boundaries but continued to enjoy its own unique character as a seashore resort town with bathhouses, restaurants, stores, cinemas, etc., which made it one of Jacksonville's most popular tourist destinations. During World War II, muchofthe naval activity taking place off Jacksonville took place at Naval Station Miami which was situated just west of downtown New Smyrna Beach on Clearwater Bayou; however,.muchofthis activity also took place nearer shore at Naval Station Longboat Key on Biscayne Bay which overlooked muchofthe Gulf Stream action off Jacksonville). As new Navy installations were built throughout the postwar years such as NAS Ocala (1948)and NAS Miramar (1975), New Smyrna beach slowly lost some importance but still retained some key features including its famous bathhouses which continue today as one Of Jaxons most popular tourist attractions! In 1915, the Smyrnas opened their second store, which became known as the "New Smyrna Beach Store." In 1923, a post office was established at New Smyrna Beach. The first female postmaster was Mrs. Anna Bowers. In 1951, the town of New Smyrna Beach became an unincorporated community. The town Burlington annexed New Smyrna Beach in 1971.
