New Smyrna Beach is a city in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The beach town's name comes from its location on the then-new seacoast between Jacksonville and St. Augustine. The first settlers in New Smyrna Beach were families of British descent who arrived in 1848 during the Seminole Wars to help suppress Native American resistance to English rule. They named their community after nearby Myrrha (modern day Myrtle Beach), England because of the similarities in culture and language. In 1853, they sold their land to Fenton Dixon for $1 per acre ($40,000). Dixon developed New Smyrna into an agricultural center with cotton plantations and commercial fishing fleets that grew wealthy through speculations in salt water resources and international trade. In 1901, Newton Davenport bought some of Fenton Dixon's land for $5 per acre ($100,000). Davenport began developing what would become known as "Davenport Row", which included much of present-day New Smyrna Beach along UF Causeway Boulevard and North Atlantic Avenue. He built a series of large Victorian homes that are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). By 1915, Davenport had developed extensive citrus production on his property that led to his becoming one of America's leading fruit merchants. Dixon died in 1924 but his legacy lives on; he was enshrined in the NRHP as part of "The Early Gilded Age Pioneers" program in 1978. During World War II, civilian workers employed by Navy Yard Corporation built a huge shipyard at Port Canaveral which produced naval aircraft carriers such as USS Enterprise (CVN-65) while also creating thousands of jobs for locals including many women working at home among other tasks such as painting ships and fitting them with airframes and engines; this contributed significantly to Coral Gables' wartime success story when it became an important military port without being bombed or occupied by Germany or Japan

Smyrna and his family in 1875. The first post office in New Smyrna Beach opened in 1876. The town became an incorporated municipality on February 15, 1907. New Smyrna Beach is situated at 31°48′N 82°20′W (31 degrees 48' N, 82 degrees 20' W). The name "New Smyrna" comes from the Greek word "smyrrachia" meaning "shoreline." The adjectival form of the word "new," which means different from what had been around before it was created, appears only once in English language sources; this occurred when Generalmajor-General James Haines visited New Smyrna Beach on December 20, 1898 as part of his campaign against Spanish forces throughout Pensacola County. He called the beachfront community "Smyrrachia" which he pronounced as rhyming syllables with ah-nuh-seem-rah
New Smyrna Beach was established in 1904 after a group of businessmen, traders and soldiers discovered the mouth of the Nassau River. The town quickly became a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful white sand beaches and wide coral reefs. The town also developed into a major commercial center with businesses such as Anheuser Busch and J.C. Penney dominating the industry. The town was renamed New Smyrna Beach in 1946 after General James H. Byrnes, Commander in Chief, Allied Expeditionary Forces during World War II
