A pier into Clearwater Bayou was built in 1912 and named after Commodore James Doolittle, Commander-in-Chief U S Fleet during World War I who flew from Key West to Tampa to bomb Spanish shipping off Havana Harbour with then Rear Admiral William Halsey commanding forces in that war; also namesake are two streets within NewPortRichey: commodore Doolittle Way and Halsey Boulevard
