The first mention of what would become New Port Richey dates back to 1819 when Captain John Bogue set up his sugar plantation here following his purchase from the Spanish government of Louisiana some years earlier. At that time it was known as Bahia de las Isabelitas because General Antonio Armijo had landed there with his army to quell an uprising against Spain which had taken place near Havana two months earlier. After landing he surveyed the land and discovered that it consisted mostly marshland which he decided to improve for farming purposes by draining off some areas to create more level ground for vegetable production. He named his new settlement Bahia de las Isabelitas – meaning Bay of the Isabelites – after himself and his wife Princess Isabelle de France then governor general of Cuba under King George III but this name never caught on among the local Native American people who called their own bay Coiba or Coveba meaning Blackwater River). The first Europeans to sight the area were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew of three ships who sailed up Richey Inlet on December 14, 1524. They named it "Verrazano's Inlet" after him. The first European settlement was built by Juan Ponce de León on a sugar cane plantation near what is now called the Pier 1 importer's market in 1795. It was abandoned in 1810, but was rediscovered in 1927 and became a National Historic Landmark in 1959.
