In 1835, Governor Andrew Hogg organized the local government under the new Florida Constitution and named it Duval County after him. In 1865–1866, New Port Richey was hit by an intense hurricane that knocked out power to most ofDuval County for weeks! The hit made headlines all over America because it was one of few hurricanes in history to cause direct economic damage beyond just loss of property and lost revenue. In 1898, A tornado touched down in New Port Richey before spinning around and striking nearby Clearwater Island killing eleven people and injuring dozens more including many children playing near the beachfront homes where Strong winds tossed them about like toys before dissipating control shortly thereafter...the first recorded tornadic windstorm in US history!
