New Port Richey is a city in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 34,635 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in the county after Fort Myers and Naples. The town has been located on the banks of Tampa Bay since 1892 and became a center for transportation when it was connected to Hillsboro by railroad in 1906. New Port Richey welcomed its first residents on October 15, 1892 with an event that included speeches from General John A.£Lbright and Governor Thomas J. Byrne. On November 8 of that year, new streets were laid out as part of a plan to make New Port more compact and attract industry while still being accessible by rail. The original downtown area was built up around what is now St Petersburg Road and Third Street and consisted of one block with two buildings: the First National Bank building (now known as courthouse) on Third Street cornering First Avenue, which served as headquarters for the town until 1907; and Drury's grocery store on Second Avenue between Fourth Street and Fifth Street where groceries were sold before streetcar service began running through town in 1904 connecting it to Hillsboro across Tampa Bay. One early resident described their experience living in Newport Richey at this time: "It will be remembered that we had three churches inside our town – one Apostolic [Church], one Methodist Episcopal Church, one Presbyterian Church - all within five blocks of each other." By 1908, when electric streetcars started operating through town providing service to Hillsboro, most businesses had moved away from downtown into newer areas such as Shields Boulevard east of present-day Second Avenue or north off Seventh Street near Tampa International Airport today. The growth of Hillsborough County during World War II led to increased demand for housing in nearby communities such as Tampa Heights, so much so that development along Fourth Street between Third Street SR 277 KeyArena Blvd., present day Sunken Garden Drive NW (just south of Interstate 4), Eighth Avenue SW (just northeast of Interstate 75), Ninth Avenue SE (just east of I-75) became necessary including demolition or relocation many old homes dating back to before 1900s

New Port Richey, Florida (formerly known as Panama City) is a city in Panama County, Florida, United States. The population was 86 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Central Florida Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now New Port Richey was Capt. John Swain who arrived on December 2, 1795 with his family from Portsmouth, England and named it after his old home port of Southampton in Hampshire. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Kissimmee River and began to trade with Native Americans for goods and furs. In 1819 he sold land near present-day Asbury Park to Captain John Atherton for $5,000 cash which became known as Atherton's Key. In 1827 Atherton founded Fort Myers with 600 acres (2 km²) at the mouth of St Johns River to protect property he had purchased from Apalachicola Chief Thaddeus Bogue. On October 15, 1830 Capt Fenton Key moved ashore on Atchison Island opposite modern day New Port Richey to build Fort Fenton Key which served as an Indian trading post through most of this period; Comanche Chief Manuel Antonio de la Torre also used it as an outpost until his removal from Monroe County in 1861 by General Don Carlos Hernando Tejada y Costilla during Mexican Territory expansion into Florida A ferry service ran between Miami and Ft Myers across Bay 4 until 1945 when channelization destroyed both boats On February 10th 1915 a group of 34 citizens assembled at Municipal Auditorium in downtown Panama City under the leadership of Mayor Cesar Chavez to demand that their mayor be re-elected promising not to riot if he did not receive more than 50% support although they received only 33%. After Chavez' death in 1916 they formed their own political party called "United American Citizens" or UAC for short UAC merged with other civic organizations including Scouts chapter #621b7c4a9a8f310a1d2edafbdd724c3ebb on November 11th 1917 forming "Panama Civic Association" or PCA which later became "New Port Richey Civic Association" or NPCA In 1920 PCA applied for incorporation but was denied because it did not have a charter from the state government; instead it turned over its power to local governing bodies including town meetings where citizens voted on ordinances passed by town councils . NewPortRicheyCivicAssociation was incorporated effective date January 1st 1921 becoming "NewPortRichey City Council". From its inception until 1971 all city council functions were vested within NPCA except for mayoral election which were held by individual members selectable by town councils each year
New Port Richey was founded in 1892 by Captain John Surry as a wharf on the mouth of the St. Johns River. The town grew quickly and in 1916, New Port became a city under the leadership of Mayor Harry C. Smith. In 1948, New Port merged with neighboring Bay City to form one large city.
