New Port Richey, Florida is a city in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,022 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 20 miles (32 km) south of Gainesville and 25 miles (40 km) north of Jacksonville. The town was founded by Dutch families in 1837 as part of the Pensacola Expedition under Governor Andrew Jackson. The name New Port Richey comes from a small bay on the eastern coast of what is now Alachua County where some early settlers landed after sailing from Key West. They named their new settlement "Nova Crichelieu" or "New Harbour". The first post office was established in 1838, and within two years it had been renamed "Port Royal" because that's where British Commodore John Hawkins disembarked his American squadron to explore Spanish Florida in 1795. In 1860, New Port Richey became an incorporated village when its inhabitants voted to join the newly formed county of Alachua. In 1888 it became a city when it became an adjacent county seat to Gainesville. A fire destroyed most of the original downtown business district in 1931 but rebuilt it again quickly with help from local businesses and citizens. New Port Richey has since become one of Florida's fastest-growing cities with a population growth rate over 7%. Today, much of downtown includes several high-rise buildings completed since 2002 including One Radisson Plaza hotel/residence complex which dominates the skyline; CenturyLink Field; Myriad HealthCare Arena; and anchor stores such as Sears and Kmart along with many smaller shops and restaurants catering to both locals and visitors alike

New Port Richey is a small town located in Citrus County, Florida. The population was 2,871 at the 2010 census. New Port Richey is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. It is bordered by St. Johns County to the south, Palm Beach County to the east, and Hillsborough County to the north. NewPortRichey was founded on December 1, 1853 as a small trading post on what is now New Port Richey Boulevard. In 1865, a group of settlers named died when their boat overturned while sailing from Havana Bay toward Pensacola. They were buried in an unmarked grave in present-day Old Fort Myers Cemetery until 1899 when they were moved to what is now New Port Richey Boulevard and East Third Street. On October 24, 1902, four brothers - George P., John m., James P.- land donated for a new community called "New Port." The first home there was built on First Street and Broadway by Elisha Aiken and his wife Emma Bogue Aiken (1843-1920). The town had its start as a small fishing village with about 20 residents fishing for shellfish off Clearwater Harbor during lunchtime on December 1st 1853 just before Christmas Break from school children's lessons Elementary School teacher Mrs.?Anna Haddad taught them how to do so that they would not get caught by their governess mother who happened to be shopping at Macy's store across the harbor at that time
In 1821, Captain John F. Kennedy and his men built a fort on the present-day site of New Port Richey. The fort was designed to protect the town from Seminole Indian raids. In 1827, the name of the fort was changed to Fort Myers after President James K. Polk's visit to the area. The fort was abandoned in 1845 and used as a training ground for the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. In 1897, New Port Richey became part of Everglades National Park and is now a part of Miami-Dade County.
