By 1899, the town had gained notoriety for its delicious seafood dishes and thereby earned itself the nickname "Fisherman's Paradise". In 1940, when World War II began, many Floridians chose to stay home because they were not required to serve in military service. However, many businesses decided to open their doors during wartime due to demand from customers who were desperate for goods and services available only during peacetime times. The result was an increase in business activity which helped contribute to overall economic growth throughout 1945-1946 season*. During this time period also saw significant growth within the community of NewPortRichey*; with additions such as a grocery store (in 1924), insurance company (in 1935), post office (in 1946), auto dealership (in 1951), bowling alley (in 1957) and several other businesses*. * These establishments have all since closed or been replaced by other more recent businesses within NewPortRicheY'S current boundaries
New Port Richey was founded in 1851 by George Walton, who named it after his grandfather, New Richey on the Lower Keys. By 1860, the town had a population of around 100 people and was known for its cotton plantations. In 1865, New Port Richey merged with neighboring Fort Myers to form the County of Lee. In 1875, the county was divided into two parts and New Port Richey became part of what is now Orange County.
