New Port Richey is a city in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name New Port Richey is an early portmanteau of "New Port on the bay" and "RICHEY". The town was founded in 1892 by J.W. Townsend and Wm. Pritchard as a small town on Pensacola Bayou (now known as Gulfport Bayou). It grew rapidly during World War II because of its proximity to Naval Base Fort Myers and its role as a munitions depot for the war effort. In 1945, New Port had a population of over 50,000 people; it now ranks tenth among Florida's cities with over 100,000 residents. During World War II, NewPort became one of the most important naval supply depots in America due to its location at Pensacola Bayou and its participation in the war effort as both an airfield and munitions plant. Many soldiers who served here were later awarded Medals of Honor for their heroism during that time period- such as First Lieutenant Commander Edward Gorman who received his medal from President Franklin D Roosevelt after he singlehandedly destroyed four German aircraft carriers while they were being refueled offshore at Pensacola Bayou on December 7th 1944
New Port Richey was founded in 1836 by Captain John Stevens. The town was named after the port of Richey on the Florida coast, from which it derived its name. The first settlers were farmers and fishermen who built their homes on small islands in the harbor. By 1840, New Port had a post office, school, and two stores. In 1849, the canal system was completed and New Port became a busy seaport with ships transporting goods to and from Tampa Bay. In 1860, the town had five schools and twenty-four businesses. It grew rapidly thanks to its good access to transportation and resources, as well as its location on the Gulf of Mexico. During World War II, NewPort played an important role in supplying munitions for the war effort. After the war ended, many businesses closed down or shifted to other sectors of society while NewPort continued to grow slowly until it reached its current size in 2000.
