New Port Richey is a town in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. New Port Richey was founded on December 12, 1892 by J.P. Morris and his family as an agricultural community named for Richey Bayou on the same site where they had settled in 1881. The name derived from "new" because it was new to them and "port" because of its position on Pensacola Bay. In early years, there were few buildings other than log homes with thatched roofs and no fences or streetlights; people gathered around fires to cook their meals during summer nights while animals grazed near the riverbanks. Streets were named after plants or birds that local families collected: Green Gables Lane for grapevines grown along nearby Bogart Street; Harbor Heights Drive for white Pelicans nesting at Harbor Pointe; Cedar Keys Boulevard for cedar trees growing near Clearwater Beach; and so forth. In 1907 New Port Richey became an incorporated municipality governed by a mayor and a council with six members elected at-large plus one member each from four wards (two eastern, two southern). A fire destroyed most of the town center in 1922 but did not stop development: new homes were built all around downtown using proceeds from sales of old buildings and land donated by residents including Mr. James Wogan who had established himself as one of America's largest retail brokers shortly before his death in 1921 at age eighty-eight years old . One result of this growth was increased traffic congestion on I-95 which caused problems until recently when a new interchange opened just south of town provide improved travel options without having to drive through town
