In 1821, New Port Richey became an incorporated town when it joined Lee County. The town has experienced some significant changes since its founding. On November 14, 1907, Hurricane Wilma passed through the area and created powerful winds and waves that caused extensive damage to homes and businesses; many people lost their lives as a result of this storm. A year later on December 6 of that year another hurricane made landfall in the area; this one caused even more damage but fortunately no deaths as a result of it. In 1925, new zoning laws were passed which changed how business could be conducted in the town limits; this led to what is known as “The Great Fire” which destroyed most of downtown New Port Richey for two weeks during October of that year. The fire also left about $2 million worth of damaged property alone After World War II ended, New Port Richey began experiencing growth due to its location opposite Jacksonville and its proximity to Interstate 95/Upper Keys Bridge which allowed for easy access to nearby jobs and shopping opportunities. Many new houses were built throughout this period while older structures were rehabilitated or replaced entirely with new construction materials In 1987-1988 much work took place within Old Town including addition of streetscape architecture pieces such as piers and brackets along with paving projects providing approximately US$5 million towards roadway improvement Also notable during these years were completion of both First Baptist Church (now known as Miracle Mile Baptist) – which had been vacant since before 1946 – and renovation/replacement/addition of several other local churches These developments helped spur economic development within NewPortRichey while also creating increased social interactions between residents
