At high tide, the water recedes so that only about 12 feet (3 meters) of beach remains above sea level at low tide; during high tide, people could walk to town because there was no more beach left once they got shore up. The first store in New Port Richey opened in 1875 and was known as The Gables Store. By 1893, there were five stores in New Port Richey with a population of 2,500 people. By 1922, there were 10 stores with a population of 25,000 people. Ira Noyes became president of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in 1959 and appointed Noyes Street as one of his stops on his travels around the country for businesspeople looking for opportunities to invest their capital into new businesses near Cape Canaveral Air Force Station When he retired from NASA in 1977 he moved to Newport News Virginia where he started Noyes Paper Company which continues today as One North Carolina Place Incorporated doing business as Old Time Paper Store Incorporated."
