New Port Richey, Florida is a town located in Lee County, Florida. The population was 9,731 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from a sugarcane plantation that was in the area at one time. In 1886, it became a city and has since grown to be one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southwest Florida. Ammunition history in New Port Richey began with the creation of Winchester Repeating Arms Company by George Smith and James Hennepin in 1887. This company made rifles and shotguns for hunting as well as military use. They also produced ammunition such as powder, shot, bullets, and projectiles. Ammunition production continued through World War I until 1921 when Winchester merged with Remington Arms Company to form Remington-Winchester Corporation. Ammunition production resumed after World War II until 1974 when it was acquired by Browning Firearms Company which continues to produce ammunition today under the Browning name. The first factory built in New Port Richey were two buildings on Constitution Boulevard that served as manufacturing plants for rifle cartridges and shotgun rounds. These facilities were used until 1902 when another factory was built on nearby State Road 811 which served as both manufacturing plants and storage areas for munitions during wartime times. During World War I, munitions production increased significantly because America needed more than just cannon balls and shells; they also needed munitions to kill people! As a result of this increase in production, some new facilities had to be constructed such as an armament plant on White Sands Boulevard which became operational on July 1st 1916! This plant manufactured machine guns and artillery shells while also housing an engine room that enabled it to make rapid fire shots using cannons! In 1918, another armament plant called Whitney Arsenal was opened on Jacksonville Avenue just north of Interstate 95 so America could produce tanks! Tanks were becoming increasingly important during World War I because they could travel long distances without being slowed down by infantry or cavalry patrols who would try to capture them or shoot them down! American tank manufacturers quickly realized how important ammunition was going to become if they wanted their products to be successful against German tanks! Accordingly, ammunition production increased again during World War I but stopped after November 1918 due to Armistice terms which left combat troops unsupported along much of Europe ! After the war ended however, ammo production recommenced again although at a lower level due To budget limitations !! During World War II American firearms producers did not build many new factories because they knew there would be no need for them once Germany started producing tanks again !!! Instead American firearms companies produced hardware such as stocks (stocks/oils), barrels (chambers/braces), sights (sight Systems Inc.), trigger arms (Brownings), hand grenades (Stencil Grenade Corp.), mines (USMEC), rockets launchers (American Rocketdyne Co.), torpedoes (!), etc…..all within reason !! Although there wasn’t always overwhelming demand for these products postwar America still managed enough resources so these companies continued making things like stocks/oils/barrels/chambers etc………. even though Americans no longer needed them !! Some examples are: Winchester Repeating Arms Company which still makes rifles today despite discontinuing manufacture around 1930; Savage Arms Corporation produces shotguns;; Remington-Winchester Corporation produces handguns;; Browning Firearms Company produces rifles (& pistols) ; USMEC manufactures rockets launchers & torpedoes……….to name but a few
