New Port Richey is located inBrevard County, Florida on the Gulf of Mexico. The city was founded on November 3rd, 1892 by Captain John H. Stroud and his wife, Belle A. Heckels. New Port Richey was incorporated as a municipality on February 1st, 1907. It became a town on December 12th, 1922. New Port Richey is known for its boating and fishing industries and its production of ammunition products including shells, shot cartridges and shotgun rounds. The city has a population of over 100,000 people who live in more than 150 businesses and tracts of land within the city limits. Ammunition manufacturing began in New Port Richey during World War II when the United States government requisitioned munitions from local mills to help fight the war effort. Ammunition factories were built throughout the ensuing decades until they closed in the late 1970s due to competition from other industrial sectors in Florida such as textiles and seafood production. However, recent efforts have revived interest in ammunition manufacturing and it currently employs about 60 people at three plants located in neighboring counties: Palm Beach Gardens-West Palm Beach; Fort Myers-Port Everglades;and Naples-Foley (nearby Miami). The first factory built in New Port Richey was called “Heckels & Company” which made shot cartridges and shotgun rounds under license from Remington Arms Company Limited of England. The company operated out of a two story brick building at 302 N Main Street until 1915 when it moved to a new facility at 4455 S Federal Way which became known as “Beemer Manufacturing” after George Beemer who served as president of Remington Arms Company Ltd., parent company for Heckels & Company from 1892 to 1915. In 1916 Beemer Manufacturing merged with American Milling Co., Incorporated (“AMC”) which had been founded by David Boggs about year earlier as an armaments manufacturer for small farmers near Tampa Bay soybean fields where he grew cornbeans for livestock feed purposes. At that time AMC also manufactured shells for both military use and commercial markets including those for artillery fire control along with rifle round types such as .32 ACP/6mm Mauser/.303 Win MAG etc..
