The city continued to grow during Reconstruction era following World War I until it reached its peak during the 1920s with an estimated 40% growth rate; damage done by Hurricane Floyd in 1999 killed more people then any other natural disaster ever recorded in Pinellas County. The Great Depression led to significant decreases in population throughout much of Pinellas Count

New Port Richey was founded in 1853 as a small town on the St. Johns River. The town grew rapidly and by 1886 had a population of 3,500 people.
