The first gun target in Naples, Florida was a 100-pounder cannonball that was placed on the University of Florida’s campus in 1875. The university had leased the cannon from the Spanish government and shot it at targets throughout the campus. The cannonball became known as “the University Cannon” due to its frequent use by students oncampus. In 1903, a 16-inch steel bullet was used to shoot a man into space, becoming one of the first human-powered projectiles to be fired from a firearm. This event is also considered to be the beginning of modern air sports in Naples. In 1922, an 8-inch steel bullet was used for the first time at an air park near Naples when it was used for practice by pilots during their training exercises. In 1927, a 20-foot wide steel wire target called “The Gull” was erected in front of City Hall in Naples after being donated by Mayor Fenton Peebles. The target measured 240 feet long and 30 feet wide and could be hit with any caliber gunfire up to 12 inches calibre. It remained artillery fire until 1988 when it was replaced by an iron post designed specifically for rifle shooting which measures 25 feet wide x 45 feet long x 2 feet high (10 m x 15 m x 0.8 m). Naples, Florida is a city in Marion County, Florida, United States. The population was 653 at the 2010 census. Neuman as a military post for Confederate General Pte. James Haines and his regiment during the American Civil War. Naples was incorporated as a city on November 3, 1907. The original name of the city may have been inspired by "The Naples Journal" which had been published in nearby Fort Myers since 1881. In 1917, Captain George Ewing donated land to make Naples an official FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization) World Food Programme refugee camp after being evacuated from Japan during World War I following his role as Commanding Officer of Japanese forces in South Korea%. This was also an act of goodwill towards Naples community which had experienced great damage due to both warring factions; the residents were grateful for Ewing's donation and soon realized their dream of becoming one with Fort Myers In 1925, local entrepreneur Milt Bearden opened what would become Bearden's only grocery store in Naples when heopened it on State Road 465 near downtown At first glance it seems like nothing much has changed about Naples over time although there have been some additions - most notably its current football stadium which replaced Dooley Stadium in 1966 For many people living here today it feels like they've known this place their whole lives- even if they've only visited once or twice!
In 1901, the Naples Chamber of Commerce was organized. The city is named after Captain F forfeit who fought in the Spanish-American War and died at age 41 in 1902. In 1907, Naples became a city charter and Douglas MacArthur was elected as its first mayor. In 1912, Naples experienced its largest fire when an arsonist destroyed many businesses on the promenade called "The Beach". This event led to the development of new business districts near The Beach. After World War II, Naples grew rapidly due to its status as a port for overseas shipping. Manufacturing also emerged as a major industry in the late1950s and early 1960s; this growth led to increased traffic congestion on Interstate 95 and other streets in downtown Naples. To address these problems, Mayor John McKay created the Central Business District (CBD) area which included most of downtown and much of Canalfield Avenue east of US Highway 1. CBD redevelopment began in earnest around 1970 with large projects such as North Park Mall, Taylor Square Shopping Center, Coliseum Stadium Shopping Center and numerous high-rise buildings; all of which helped improve transportation access, reduce traffic congestion and spur economic development within the city limits. On December 15th 1980, Mayor Joe Vitt announced that he would not seek re-election due to health reasons; City Councilman Don Young took his place effective February 1st 1981 until Vitt's death less than one year later on January 3rd 1982 at 78 years old. On May 2nd 1984 Mayor Young resigned after being caught up in federal bribery charges; Vice President George H W Bush then became acting mayor until November 5th 1984 when Condoleezza Rice was elected by acclamation over Young for a four-year term that ended on January 3rd 1990 when she succeeded him as U.S. Ambassador to Japan
