This site would serve as headquarters for all U.S.-led troops during World War II before becoming renamed Marine Barracks by President Truman in 1949 following World War II’s end. In 1955, Naval Air Station Pensacola was established adjacent to Marine Barracks which later became NAS Jacksonville (later NAS Miami). The growth of NAS Jacksonville (later NAS Miami) led to the establishment of two other naval air stations within proximity: NAS Fort Lauderdale (established 1960) and NAS Tampa (established 1966). New Naples, Florida was founded in 1892 by J.D. Payne and James Wickersham as a small community on the banks of the Kissimmee River in east-central Florida. The town grew rapidly due to its location, good soil, and virgin forested areas that were perfect for agriculture. In addition to its agricultural production, Naples also became known for its geological features – including the dark basalt hills that make up much of the cityscape. With its rich history and unique culture, Naples has been a popular tourist destination for many years. The first permanent inhabitants of Naples were Native American tribes who had lived there for centuries before European arrival. Spanish settlers arrived in 1565 and began trading with the natives along the coast. The area now encompassing Naples was part of Alachua County until 1800 when it was added to Orange County as part of a larger land grant given to Colonel James Wilkinson by King George III. By 1810, however, Orange County had grown too large for Wilkinson to manage and he sold it off piecemeal to various Spaniards, Englishmen, Frenchmen, Germans (mostly Protestants), Mormons (who established an LDS colony in 1840), and Italians over the next several decades. In 1892 Jacksonville entrepreneur J.D. Payne purchased 3 square miles of what is now downtown Naples from Captain John Aikens in order to establish a new town on the opposite bank of the Kissimmee River from where he operated his cotton gin business atapologetic fifteen cents per pound (grapefruit) ground into flour orPayne’s Own Flour). After two years of construction work Payne opened his store on October 11th1892and named it after himself –J D PNEASVILLE! From this point on Naples would be known as one of America’s most growing cities with rapid population growth thanks largely to waves of immigrants arriving during both World Wars II (the town received its nickname “America’s City Without Poverty” because most residents self-provided foodstuffs such as meat and vegetables). In 1861, during the American Civil War, Naples sided with the Confederate States of America and participated in the Battle of Fort Donelson. After the war, Naples continued to grow as a result of its ties to the Confederacy. In 1928, Naples joined Spain as part of its Spanish Empire. In World War II, Naples was an important target for German bombers because it had a large population of Jews who lived in concentration camps throughout southern Italy. However, despite being bombed repeatedly, no lives were lost in Naples during World War II.
