In 1861, Mount Dora became part of Union Territory following the American Civil War and then again under Confederate Territory following their victory over the United States in 1865. In 1907, Hurricane Andrew caused extensive damage to nearby towns including Fort Myers and Naples but no damage was done to Mount Dora itself despite being hit particularly hard due its proximity to both towns (approximately 8 miles). Although much damage had been done by Andrew within minutes of landfalling on mainland Florida (and even since before landfall), little attention was given whatsoever either by locals or visitors until AFTER all photos/ souvenirs had been taken! Many people attribute this largely due "the good press" associated with Hurricane Andrew which generated massive amounts ($$$) ratings for satellite TV channels worldwide (and many readers contacted us asking how they could obtain items related thereto - still some mystery today!) Not only did tourism not suffer materially fromAndrew however - prices for goods originating from Ft Myers actually went up slightly during those days... marginal at best! Consequently dust & dirt kicked up around MtDora post-hurricane (& cleanup costs)... pretty exciting stuff ;)
