Mount Dora is a mountain located in the panhandle of Florida. The peak, at 6,411 feet (1,828 meters), is one of the highest points in the state. It was named for General James H. Mount Dora, who served as Quartermaster General during the American Civil War and was aide to Confederate general Robert E. Lee. In 1881, a group of prospectors discovered gold on the mountain and decided to build an adobe fort on its slopes. In 1912, the United States Geological Survey enlarged Mount Dora Heights National Monument to encompass part of the mountain and removed all but a small number of trees so that visitor centers could be built on its summit. The monument remains today as a national park with hiking trails up to its top. The first Europeans to arrive in Florida were Spanish explorers in 1539–41 who mapened what is now southwest Florida's Panhandle area before sailing eastward across Tampa Bay into Georgia en route to Mexico City. A letter from Juan Ponce de León describing his discovery of this area was sent back north by Christopher Columbus on October 14, 1504; it has been suggested that Mount Dora may have been named for him since he sighted land close by around what is now Pensacola Harbor on November 8th . The first Indian sighting near Pensacola Harbor occurred sometime between 1768-1769 when an Indian canoe returned from eastward exploration and reported finding shoals or bars of iron ore off shore which led Governor Royal Navy mariner John Laurenzo ashore for further exploration about February 2nd 1770 also documented local fishing grounds off coast).
