Mount Dora, Florida is a small town located in Hillsborough County, Florida. The population was 3,569 as of the 2010 census. The Mount Dora post office opened in 1892 and closed in 1958. Mount Dora is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The townsite was first settled by German immigrants in the 1840s. In 1892, Mount Dora's first postmaster, George Wirthman, established the first mail service between Tampa and Clearwater through his home on First Street. It wasn't until 1915 that a new Post Office building was built at Second Street and US 41 to accommodate the growing town. By 1930, there were over 100 residents living in Mount Dora. During World War II, Mount Dora played an important role as a munitions plant for Hillsborough County and produced artillery shells used by the United States military duringthe war. After hostilities ended in 1945, most of the plant's production stopped but some parts continued to be operated until 1971 when it finally closed down due to dwindling resources and changing technology. Since its closure, many people have moved into nearby communities such as Ybor City or Pinellas Park while others have started businesses or rented out space within the old plant site; however no permanent housing has been constructed onsite since 1971
