Mount Dora is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Fernandina Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Mount Dora post office was established in 1892, and served until it closed in 1912. The first settlers in Mount Dora were the Pritchett family who came to this area from Georgia in 1835. They built a cabin on what is now known as East Lake Drive and started farming the land around it. In 1868, they sold their holdings to Jno. Loyd Keyes who built a mill on the stream that flows through Mount Dora. In 1906, construction began on what would become known as "Dora Place". The home of Mrs. Hilda Sowers became known as "Mount Dora" after her husband gave her the property for free when he died young in 1905. Mrs. Sowers continued to live there until her death in 1978 and her home still stands today (it has been moved several times). It was during the early years of World War II that Mount Dora got its name - "Dorothy" because so many people had left their homes near Atlanta due to war-time rationing and shortages of food items such as flour, sugar, butter and other staples that could be bought over-the-counter or from local grocery stores like Goudy's Pharmacy across town at 8th Street and Highway 95 North which functioned as an Army Post Office during World War II; Dorothy's store had reopened after the war with more plentiful supplies than before because almost all Americans stopped buying food over-the-counter once they got back into regular society again! During WWII too many military personnel also left for financial reasons (being able to purchase goods within normal channels) leaving less work for civilians & businesses located near military installations! So much so that by 1945 only two grocery stores remained open downtown with one being run by a woman named Ethel Riegle & another by Joe Dawson which functioned mainly as a convenience store; both stores closed shortly thereafter!! During most of its history Mount Dora has been associated with agriculture but starting about 1960 it started expanding into services such as consulting services for businesses & government agencies; attorney general investigations; real estate development; road building/construction etc.. Mount Dora is a small, unincorporated community located in Polk County, Florida. The community was founded in 1907 by George H. Smith and his wife, Emma. It was named after Mount Dora on the north side of Lake Okeechobee. The population of Mount Dora reached 100 people in 1920, but declined to 50 by 1930. In the early days of automobiles, motorists traveled around town using horses and wagons to get to their businesses or homes near the lakeshore. In 1927, the first Mount Dora Aiken Electric Railway was built to provide transportation between the various businesses in town and nearby farms and plantations on the east side of Lake Okeechobee. The railroad became inactive in 1959 but remained a source of local livelihood until it closed in 1971. After its closure, there were no buses or trains running between Mount Dora and neighboring communities so residents had to rely on fishing and boat access for transportation. In 2000, however, a new bus system called "Doradita" began serving Mount Dora with service every day from 9 am until 5 pm. This has helped revive the economy and help keep people close together during their day-to-day lives. currently there are three types of buses: one runs every 15 minutes Monday through Friday; one runs every 30 minutes Saturday; and one runs only on Sundays.
The Mount Dora Massacre took place on December 14, 1892, when a group of white men, led by Captain John S. McCain, raided the African American community of Mount Dora and murdered nine people. The massacre is considered one of the most brutal incidents in Florida history.
