The name comes from Indian-owned land that used to be part of what is now Volusia County. The first white person to settle in what is now Mount Dora was William Harper in 1835. In 1927, the town became an incorporated city with its own government and mayor under a system called "Councilman Government." The first post office opened in Mount Dora on March 4, 1883. By 1907, there were six businesses in the community with a total payroll of $1,500. In 1912, Mount Dora had a school for grades one through twelve which was built by Mrs. Cressie Pritchard for $7000. It remained open until 1954 when it closed due to lack of enrollment. A new school was built in 1957 and remains in use today as the only high school within easy reach of most residents today Today's economy relies heavily on tourism as well as agriculture which has been dwindling over time because of changes in weather patterns and technology which have made growing crops more difficult or even impossible without additional investment or outside help In 1917-1920 there was an effort by members of Congress known as "The Great Miami Nation" Movement led by Representative James Meeks to purchase 3 million acres (10 km²) east of Daytona Beach including what is now Mount Dora Mount Dora would become their proposed homeland providing they could gain passage through Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who refused Eventually Congress did pass legislation allowing them entry but it never happened . This event helped spur development around present day Daytona Beach During World War II many people from surrounding communities joined up with military service including those from Mount Dora who raised money for food stamps After the war many returned home while others moved away because life didn't offer what they expected such as opportunities for work or education although some did leave permanently

The peak was first reached by Spanish expeditions in 1565 and named La Muerte because it was here that Padre Francisco Ximenez died after being lost at sea during his attempt to find a northwest passage through South America.
