Mount Dora is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. The Mount Dora post office opened in 1892 and closed in 1980. The first permanent settlers to Mount Dora were David Porter and his family who arrived from Illinois on September 9, 1875. They erected a log cabin on what is now the north side of Mount Dora Boulevard just west of Third Street. In 1880, John Rankin and his party setTLight to build a sawmill around where Fourth Street meets Third Street today. The mill operated until 1902 when it burned down due to an accidental fire that also damaged several other buildings in the community including the Porter home which still stands today as a museum attraction known as "Dorothy's House." In 1907, another group of pioneers led by Andrew Hargrave moved into what is now the south side of Mount Dora Boulevard and erected a new log cabin which they called "Hargrave's Cabin". This structure served as the nucleus around which development continued for many years with only minor changes until 1955 when it was replaced by its current incarnation - "Mount Dora" - after Hargrave sold his interest to developer Don Heitzel Sr. In 1957, Heitzel added an additional story to "Hargrave's Cabin" becoming one of the first homes in Mount Dora to be built with air conditioning . From then on, all homes built in Mount Dora followed this same plan with an addition or subtraction of stories depending upon their popularity at that time (e.g., Most Allurement Additions had two stories). On January 6th, 1960 Congressman James Buchanan delivered remarks during a meeting at Fort Myers Beach State Park about climate change being caused by human activity such as increase emissions from automobiles and industry etc., which lead to increasing levels of humidity and rainstorms due to temperature differences between coastal areas inlandAtlanticUpper Midwest within hurricane-infested Gulf Stream zones thereby exacerbating global warming trends etc..
