Mount Dora is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The Mount Dora Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1902. The Mount Dora School District was created in 1909. The Mount Dora Post Office opened on May 3, 1912, and closed on October 20, 1966. The population of Mount Dora was 1,564 at the 2010 census. In 1992 the MountDora Volunteer Fire Department merged with the Hillsboro Volunteer Firefighters Association to form the present-day MountDora/Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Department. The first settlers to what is now Mount Dora were two families who moved from Georgia in 1821: John Lewis and his wife Sarah Goodloe Lewis; and Daniel Boone and his wife Catherine Boone. The Lewis family built a cabin on a remote piece of land near present day Highway 17 about five miles northeast of town. They named it "Mt. Pleasant". In 1827 James Mosely settled down around what is now downtownMountDora with his family and started raising livestock and growing crops as well as some trees for lumbering purposes which he did not sell or give away to others until after he died in 1836 when his son James Mosely II took over the farmstead operations. After James Mosely II's death in 1840 his widow Mary married Jacob Hogg who ran the mill that produced flour for local merchants such as Gadsden attorney Troup & Sons store, C&I Store (later JCPenney), Wabash Railroad Depot (later WMATA), etc., among other businesses around town before moving to Mobile due to health concerns in 1865 where she later died at age ninety-six years old leaving four children including their father James Mosely III who continued running Hogg's Mill until 1945 when it was taken over by Pettit Brothers operate under the name "Pettit's Mill" thereafter known as Patton Elevator Company later renamed Alcoa Aluminum Company Incorporated.)Jacob Hogg had been born into an early Swedish settler family that arrived at Pensacola Bay area between 1763-1768 during French occupation of Florida prior to American independence via Captain Johann Friedrich von Echols landing party on April 12th 1795 He later became one of six commissioners appointed by President George Washington designating Tallahassee County Plantation Area vacant areas within Indian Land east of Stonington River site thus becoming part of our county today including most portions of Polk County northcentral panhandle
The Mount Dora Massacre took place on October 16, 1903, when a group of white men, led by Jim Bridger, massacred nine black Seminole Indians at the height of the Florida panhandle fever epidemic. The massacre is considered to be one of the most infamous massacres in U.S. history.
