Gun sights history in Mount Dora, Florida began with the early 19th century. The first gunsights were designed by Captain John C. Fremont and Lieutenant George Armstrong Custer to help with artillery fire during the American Civil War. Mount Dora was founded in 1839 as a small community on the east side of Lake Okeechobee. Over time, it grew into a township and then a city. On December 6, 1926, Mount Dora became an incorporated town within the County of Miami-Dade. In 1978, Mount Dora annexed part of neighboring unincorporated community of Belle Glade. The origin of gun sights can be traced back to Captain John C. Fremont and Lieutenant George Armstrong Custer during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Captain Fremont was commanding officer of Company K, 3rd U.S Cavalry Regiment at the Battle of Antietam in 1862; Lieutenant Custer served under him as Second Lieutenant in Company L, 2nd US Cavalry Regiment at that battle also known as “The moral victory” because they prevented Confederate General Robert E Lee from achieving any significant victories against Union troops during that campaign. In 1864, Captain Fremont redesigned his original firearms sights which he called “Fremontian red dot” sights; these were used by cavalry soldiers on horseback for target shooting practice. These new devices consisted of two circles or “pits” placed close together on a long stem device designed to direct shots onto targets located inside these circles without having to wear glasses or use other forms of magnification while aiming at targets outdoors using traditional cannonfire techniques such as elevation and windage (which could only be achieved through use of rifles with telescopic sight attachments). During World War I (1914-1918), both America and Great Britain fielded large numbers of artillery pieces equipped with muzzleloaders; however due to problems associated with ballistics performance when firing heavy projectiles offhand rather than using iron shot charges manufactured specifically for this purpose around various British army installations including Fort Donelson near Nashville Tennessee where prior heavy bombardment had been conducted previous year there remained evidence remaining from previous attacks & shells having impacted nearby trees & buildings & subsequently causing notable damage thereby leading To Requisition Of New Muzzle Loading Artillery Howitzers By The British Armies In March 1918 resulted In Called For Increase In Ammunition Capacity Of All Australian Army Barracks As Well As Increased Numbers Of Machine Guns Which Led To Development Of Gun Sights On Cannon By Australian Military architects Also Resulting In Name Change From Iron Shot Gunsight To Gun Sight And Red Dot Sight When Used On Field Equipment

In 1892, the first white people arrived on Mount Dora, and named it after General Thomas P. Morgan, who had been in charge of Seminole Indian Affairs during the Florida Revolution. The area around Mount Dora became known as "Morgan's Jungle." In 1915, General James Fenton moved US forces from Gainesville to Mount Dora to take up arms against Spanish influenza. After a year of fighting, Fenton's army withdrew and Fort Walton Beach was established as the new location for military operations in Central Florida.
