Mount Dora is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Walton Beach–Boca Raton metropolitan area. Mount Dora is known for its annualCountry Walk and Pumpkin Patch Parade which takes place on October 15th each year. The first inhabitants of what is now Mount Dora were the Creek Nation people who lived along the riverbanks near present-day downtown Escambia County. In 1795, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto named this location after his friend and mentor Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, who had also explored this region before him. The first white settlers arrived in 1821 when John Pritchard and Isaac Griggs built a cabin on higher ground about two miles east of where Mount Dora now stands. At that time it was one of only four isolated settlements in Escambia County and was home to just twelve residents; however, within five years all but three of those residents had left for other parts of Florida or Georgia due to disease or persecution from Seminole Indians living nearby on Opa Locka Hill (now Pinellas Park). In 1824 Captain Richard Bache moved his store and post office to what is now downtown Mount Dora from his original settlement upstream on Gadsden River opposite modern day Pensacola Naval Base; Bache later served as Mayor of Pensacola from 1830 to 1832 under Governor Thomas Cranch Wilson’s administration. In 1827 James White established a sawmill at what is now Live Oak Road NW and began operations; White became owner of the mill until its sale in 1896 to J.P./Hugh Mote Associates who operated it until 1951 when it passed into the hands of GulfCoast Corporation subsidiary Gulf Coast Power Company Limited which operates it today as a museum open to the public . In 1840 Joe McCann set up a gristmill at present-day US 1 southwest of downtown Mount Dora; McCann continued production through 1899 when he sold his interest to Rufus Eaves . Around 1850 William Fenton erected two frame homes northwest of US 1 – one still standing – along with an outhouse - nearpresent-day Live Oak Road NW between Patton Boulevard SW and US 301/SR 26 . By 1860 there were six residences in Mount Dora with twenty seven employees operating four mills average daily productivity ranging from 60 lbs per worker to 300 lbs per worker providing flour for local grocery stores, building supplies, lumber for furniture manufacturing etc.; by 1870 there were thirteen residences with over fifty employees including ten mechanics employed in woodworking factories making oak doors, casks & plaques etc.; by 1880 most residents had either died or moved away leaving only eight residences remainingivespecifically noted during that decade.. A group of English investors mined gold on the mountain from 1830-1836 but abandoned the project because they did not find any significant amounts of gold. Afterward, many people visited Mount Dora to view its natural beauty but no one developed anything around it until early 20th century when an Italian businessman named Antonio Righi bought land around Bald Mountain and started developing it into a tourist area called "Ridgeland". After purchasing some rights to use bald mountain for military purposes in World War I, he turned it into an amusement park with various rides and attractions such as a golf course that became popular among Americans during World War II.
Mount Dora was founded by the Seminoles in 1836. The town was destroyed by a fire in 1875 and rebuilt with Indian help. Mount Dora is now a ghost town, but it retains its culture and history.
