Mount Dora is a small, rural town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. Mount Dora is located on Tampa Bay and bordered by Lakeland to the east, Clearwater to the north, and Immokalee to the west. The name for Mount Dora comes from "Dorcas" or "Doña Dorcas," who supposedly resided there in 1795. A post office was established at Mount Dora in 1875, and remained in operation until 1959. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and is water. Mount Dora's history dates back to 1855 when General James K. Polk sent Major General George Armstrong Custer into south central Florida with orders to rid the area of Seminole Indians. After three days of combat Custer's column discovered an Indian village on a mountain called Mulberry Hillock and ordered his men not to fire until they had confirmation that no Seminoles were present. As it turned out only one man (Aïda Ponce de Leon) had been killed during this engagement; however local legend has it that several other members of Custer's unit were scalped as they retreated back down Mulberry Hillock after their victory over the Indians. In 1911 Mount Dora was chosen as home for what would become known as Pinellas County - part of what would be renamed Hillsborough County in 1963 following passage of the Puregon Amendment which granted voting rights to all citizens regardless of race or color within Hillsborough County limits - making Mount Dora one of just two towns in Hillsborough County without racial segregation (the other being Plantation Village). The first African American resident arrived in 1961 when Vernon Stroud moved from Miami Gardens into an apartment complex near downtown Mount Dora after purchasing property adjacent to Gulfstream Park south of US-1./ Interior minister John Connally announced that Stroud would become "the first African American appointed Justice Of The Peace" for Pinellas County - effectively fulfilling Nixon's promise made during his campaign for president that all citizens have equal access to justice under law regardless their race/ethnicity / national origin

The peak, located about 8 miles east of downtown, was first sighted by Europeans in 1539 when they were exploring Florida's Pensacola Bay area. In 1868, the U.S. government acquired land around the mountain and built Fort Dora as a military post to protect it from Seminole Indians. In 1927, the fort was turned into an educational institution and renamed Mount Dora High School after its namesake. The city of Mount Dora grew up around Fort Dora and eventually became an important center for education in Central Florida. The school district that served Mount Dora until 1974 also developed a number of businesses and services within the city limits. These include a grocery store, bank, insurance company, doctor's office, and multiple restaurants and bars. The vibrant community has since been replaced by a more subdued atmosphere with less commercial activity but still remains an important part of Central Florida history.
Mount Dora is a mountain in the Unincorporated community of Mount Dora, Florida. It was named for Capt. Augustus M.D. Burney, an officer with the East Florida Railroad Company and a member of the United States Geological Survey's 7th Cavalry Regiment during the Seminole Wars.
