After successfully assaulting Fort Moultrie on November 9th while under cover of darkness, Polk moved his army up the coast towards Mexico City en route to invading Texas two weeks later. As he was about to cross the Rio Grande near San Antonio de Bexar (now Houston), he was informed by Commodore John Farragut that Mexican forces had attacked American ships offshore near Cape Coral Cove on October 14th and taken several prisoners including Rear Admiral Samuel Miller who would later play a significant role in leading America into World War II
