In 1945, American Airlines Corp acquired US Airways which had been formed from Atlantics Airways & Trust Co., Ltd., a group of airlines owned by Harry Laughlin Tucker Jr., one of America's first aviation billionaires. The land around present-day Mount Dora was first settled by Africans who worked on rural plantations until 1898 when they were allowed to purchase parcels of real estate totaling . Negroes were excluded from many aspects of life in early Escambia County including education and employment opportunities which limited their access to resources and increased their vulnerability to exploitation by white farmers and entrepreneurs. African Americans did not migrate to Escambia County until after World War II due to segregation laws that prohibited them from entering white areas without prior permission from local officials or landlords
The Mount Dora area was once a mainstay of the Seminole Indian Tribe. The tribe inhabited this area for over two centuries before it was forced to move in 1835 by white settlers. The tribe's last Chief, Big Chief Dora, died in 1868. In 1898, the United States acquired Florida from Spain and annexed the Mount Dora area into the territory. In 1950, following Florida's admission into the United States as a state, Mount Dora became part of Lake County.
