The area was part of the Seminole Nation and after the Indian Removal Act of 1830, most of the Indians were forced to leave the Mount Dora region. A small group of settlers, led by Andrew Jackson, arrived in 1795 and began farming around what is now Mount Dora. By 1810, many local farmers had developed a prosperous farm economy based on horse-drawn vehicles and irrigation systems. In 1814, a post office was established at Mount Dora with mail sent from Tampa. In 1837, Isaac Hubbard built a sawmill on the west bank of Whitewater River. The mill continued to operate until 1956 when it was replaced by a more modern mill. In 1841, Major General James Hernando DeSoto discovered Lake Miccosukee and named it for his brother Manuel de Soto y Menendez (1759-1828), Spanish governor of Florida during this time period. In 1840–1842, two companies were organized to develop the land around present day Mount Dora: The Aucilla Company and The Hiram Company. Both companies failed to establish any commercially significance in their operations and disbanded within a few years due to lack of success or capitalization). However, because they had laid out well-developed roads through much of central Florida during this time period they are considered some formative pioneers in that industry as well as in later development near Orlando/Lake Buena Vista
