Today, Inverness Drive remains one ofFortLauderdale's primary streets while also hosting various businesses including two banks (JPMorgan Chase & Citibank) as well as several restaurants and nightlife venues such as Pompano Beach's Atlantic City Casino Resort & Hotel and Hollywood's Regal casino hotel The area around Inverness Drive has seen other significant development since then including multiple medical clinics (including Memorial Hospital), shopping centers (such as Westchester Plaza Mall), office buildings (such as One America Plaza), and three high school campuses: Southwestern High School, Miramar Senior High School, and North Fort Lauderdale Senior High School As one of Broward County's largest employers – retiring lieutenant colonel James Huggins established Huggins Restaurants here in 1961 – Miramar has long been center stage for local economic activity both before and after Hurricane Irma hit on September 5th 2017 leaving much damage behind Since Irma many have started efforts to rebuild or return home some locals are even working on rebuilding homes they once occupied
Miramar was founded in 1892 by A.H. Mirabal and his brother José. The original land for Miramar was donated by the Patrician Dona Isabel de la Vega y Cepeda, widow of General Antonio López de Santa Clara, who had sold Rancho San Pedro to the Mirabal family in 1785. The first store on the corner of Military and Bay streets opened in 1892, serving as a dropoff point for pedestrians and horse-drawn vehicles on their way to other businesses near downtown. In 1916, the city of Miami annexed Miramar and became its legal home. In 1951, a new annex added Key Biscayne which at that time constituted part of Miami-Dade County. In 1983, Miramar incorporated as a city with its own police department and mayoralty; it is an unincorporated community located within Miami-Dade County. As of 2010, there are over 100 businesses in town including restaurants, stores, galleries and residences; it is also home to two colleges: University of South Florida (USF) and Lamar University School of Law
