They developed a plan to clean up the area and this led to the current day environment which is characterized by green spaces, parks, and schools

The first permanent settler in Miramar was Capt. John Soward and his family who arrived in 1792 from Rhode Island. They built a log cabin on what is currently known as Green Street which served as their home for over fifty years. In 1836, Miramar became part of St. Johns County when it was formed from parts of Hillsborough and Pasco counties. The first post office was established here on October 1, 1837 by Wm. Cranch (father of future U.S Congressman Wm. Cranch). At that time there were just twelve families living here and only two stores open for business; one operated by Jno Acker & Co., a dry goods store and the other by Pee Wee Hutton & Sons grocery store which had been opened earlier that year by Pee Wee Hutton’s father-in-law, Elisha Moody Jr.. On May 1, 1892, Miramar was incorporated as a town. On Dec. 3, 1896, it became a city. The population of Miramar was 27 in 1920 and grew to over 100 by 1940. In the 1960s, Miramar experienced growth in the tourism industry due to its location on Florida's only Overseas Contingency Zone (OCZ) during the Vietnam War era.
