He named it Santa Clara de la Vega after Sanctuario de las Nieves—the patron saint of Valencia Province—near which he had landed on Easter Sunday week prior to his voyage northwestward across North America.In 1821, Miramar became a part of Monroe County following its creation from parts of Duval and Seminole Counties; however, because its location made it difficult for settlers to access marketable land or build roads they remained primarily agriculturalists until about 1910 when some development began around town center including retail stores (later becoming known as Miracle Mile).[2][3][4]In 1907,[5] Jacksonville built an airfield just south of town which gave Miramar an advantage over other towns along I-4 due to its short runway length and lack of obstructions.[6]The old school house still stands today as one block north off US 1A between State Road 526 and State Road 527 with an extensive collection of African American artifacts dating back to before slavery including slave weights and logs given to local blacksmiths during emancipation process
