Miramar, Florida is a small town located in Lee County, Florida. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The community was founded by Spanish colonists in 1835 and named for Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, captain general of Cuba under Ferdinand VII. Miramar became an American military post in 1898 during World War I when it was established as a staging ground for supplies entering the war from Mexico City. The post saw combat on both sides of the conflict and closed its doors permanently in 1918 after the Armistice ending World War I.
