Miramar is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The Miramar Airport served as a commercial airport from 1923 to 1970 and now serves as a general aviation airport. The land that would become Miramar was first settled in 1843 by brothers George and Jesse Evans. They built their cabin on what is now East Meridian Street. A post office was established in 1845, and the name was changed to Miramar in 1852 after Major James Bogue who had been killed during the Seminole Wars near Tallahassee. In 1870, white farmers began buying land around what is now Miramar and started to build homes. By 1900, there were over 180 residents living in Miramar with two churches serving the community- First Methodist Church and Second Presbyterian Church-. In 1925, the Monroe County Board of Commissioners voted to create an airfield for use by military aircraft based at Fort Myers Air Station on property east of town along Southwest Fourth Street (now US 27). The Airport opened on November 17th, 1927 with four P-40s from Fort Myers which became operational on December 3rd . The first retail store opened at this airfield - Price'sgeneral Store - operated by TWA Aviation under contract from Monroe County until it closed its doors in 1957 due to financial difficulties.. In 1930, members of Congress approved legislation authorizing creation of a municipal corporation called "Miramar" within Monroe County with power to levy taxes for public purposes including fire protection and street cleaning etc.. On February 2nd 1932 incorporation papers were filed with the county clerk - officially becoming a municipality! On May 10th 1933 Mayor JH Whitehead proclaimed "Miramar Towne" Homeport Range AAF! With World War II coming up it made sense that they set up shop inside one of America's most important airfields! On July 26th 1944 President Franklin D Roosevelt announced that Tampa Bay had been bombed; specifically targetting Japanese forces stationed at Ft Myers AFB! As part of his address he said "I want you all Robertson Beach ..... we can't let them bomb our beach .... I want you all here tomorrow morning between 7:00amand 11:00am sharp .... come ashore ..... I'll show you how it's done!" This order came direct from Roosevelt himself!! So much for those rumors about him not being able to handle stress! After World War II ended there wasn't any need for an airfield anymore so money was saved and used towards building schools, clinics, water systems etc.? At this time everything stopped being built or renovated until 1986 when they decided that they should redo everything because according to current plans it will be ready no matter what? What happened next isn't exactly clear but soon afterwards they started having problems with mosquitoes so again money was saved? But then again something didn't seem right so finally someone realized maybe THEY messed up again?!?! After some more research they determined that maybe the original plan hadn't been followed properly so they redid everything again BUT THIS TIME THEIR MISTAKE WAS SERIOUS SO NOW THEY HAVEN'T EVEN STARTED PLANNING AGAIN?? HOW CAN THEY EXPECT ANYTHING GOOD TO COME FROM THAT???

After the war ended, most of the military units left andMiramar slowly lost its status as an important local community until 1990 when it gained again municipal status under Mayor Arturo Carbonell. In recent years, Miramar has seen another growth trend with new businesses opening up and more people coming to live there because of its outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, swimming and boating opportunities available along its shoreline. There are also plans to build an arena for professional basketball and soccer teams as well as create jobs in various aspects of downtown development not just related to tourism but also manufacturing or creative industries depending on how those projects pan out
The area now known as Miramar was first inhabited by the Tequesta Native American tribe. The area was first surveyed in 1762 by Captain Manuel de Portocarrero, and named after the Miramar Lagoon which he found near present-day Key Biscayne Boulevard and Coral Gables Avenue. In 1821, then-Captain John D. Taylor of the Florida East Coast Railroad named it for Lieutenant Colonel James H. Miramar, who had been killed in action during the Mexican–American War. By 1881, all of Miami-Dade County had been organized, and Miramar became part of that county. In 1912, a post office was established at Miramar with the name "Key Biscayne". That year, key lime trees were planted on what is now NE Fourth Street between Southwest 72nd Avenue and Northwest 176th Avenue in what is now Midtown Miami Beach. The trees are still there today and are a part of Miami's heritage preserved through public ownership. In 1915, Major General Sabinus Wofford designed and built an airfield atMiramar which served as a military base for patrolling Everglades National Park during World War I. During World War II, much ofMiramar was used as an airbase for fighter planes flying from Fort Lauderdale International Airport (LUV) northwest to Homestead Air Force Base southwest;and from Plantation Road east to Bolton Road;and also from NW Second Street north to SW First Street where runway 3A would be located when it opened on December 14th 1945;This airport also hosted Republic P-47 Thunderbolt jets flown by USAAFfrom NAS North Island at Plantation Road along with Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighters during 1944 Operation Crossroads following US invasion of Japan On December 15th 1945 this airport closed after many years of use when Japanese forces withdrew from the war
