It is located on the North Shore of Miami-Dade County and is bounded by Miami Beach to the south, Boca Raton to the east, Belle Glade to the north and west, and Pompano Beach to the northwest. The name "Miramar" comes from "mira," meaning "the sea."
Miramar is a small town in Duval County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,813. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name "Miramar" means "gateway to the sea." The town was founded in 1892 by John Hargrave and named for his daughter Miriam. The first settlers were Englishmen who came overland from England in 1839. A small community grew up around them on Miami Riverboats. In 1892, John Hargrave moved to Miramar with his family and started a grocery store and post office. He also began developing land which eventually became the town center today. In 1925, Miramar incorporated as a city and developed its own police department and fire department. In 1978 it changed its name to Jacksonville after being selected as one of six finalists for the city's new nickname program that year (the others were Tampa, Clearwater, St Petersburg, Panama City, Key West). In 1990 Jacksonville annexed most of Duval County which included Miramar. The annexation created an additional 597 residents within Jacksonville limits alone - more than double what Miramar had when it incorporated as a city! Today there are over 10 thousand people living in or near Miramar - all working together to maintain this vibrant community! Some notable businesses include Subway sandwich shops throughout town; Toys “R” Us; Sears; Lowe’s Home Hardware; JCPenney; Macy’s Department Store; Barnes & Noble bookstore chain; Borders Bookstore chainsaw stores across town (including one located next door to Subway); Ford dealership on I-95 South near Exit 139A - home of Northrop Grumman / Boeing Aviation Division since 1941 (!); KFC restaurant on mile marker 231 south just off US-1 near exit 103B - unusual location given that only two other restaurants are located anywhere within 4 miles of downtown Jacksonville proper! There is also an amusement park called Park place offering rides such as Ferris Wheels/Taco Bell/ water slides etc.; annual agricultural show at nearby Gulfstream International Airport called "Pinellas Expo" featuring tractor pulling competitions etc.; golf courses scattered throughout Duval County including several owned by major companies like PGA Tour Champions Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson among others...and much more!

In 1565, Miramar was the first Spanish settlement in what is now Florida. Spanish explorers seeking to find a new route to Asia discovered the area in 1565 and named it La Isla de Cuba after their homeland. The island was soon explored by Englishman John Hawkins and his crew who were looking for a new route to Asia. A landing on La Isla de Cuba on October 12, 1565 led to the beginning of an era of exploration that would change the course of history. On November 1, 1565, Hawkins and his men landed on the shores of Tampa Bay with the intention of finding a way through to China. Unfortunately for Hawkins, he only discovered one small bay which would later be known as Tampa Bayou. After exploring this part of Tampa Bayou they returned home having failed in their quest to find China. This event is often considered as one of the most significant moments in American history because it marked the beginning of commercial development within America. For years after Hawkins' arrival in Tampa Bay there were no permanent settlements established until Miramar was founded in 1831 by Governor David Forsyth with help from Colonel James Ketchum Sr.. Fort Brooke served as both a military outpost and temporary capital before being moved to its current location near Hillsborough County Courthouse in 1835
The Miramar Naval Air Station is a naval air station located in Miramar, Florida. It was opened in late 1943 as a weather station on Key Biscayne Beach. The first aircraft were stationed here and the first military mission was flown from this air station on December 10, 1943 when USAAF pilot Charles "Chuck" Yeager piloted his own Spitfire to victory against an RAF formation. In 1948, the Navy transferred ownership of the airport to the county and it has been used as an airport ever since.
