Miramar, Florida is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It is bounded to the north by Everglades National Park and to the east by Biscayne Bay. The population was 5,028 as of the 2010 census. The area that now makes up Miramar was first populated by Choctaw Indians who had been living there for centuries before European contact. Spanish colonists arrived in 1795 and began to develop the area around what is now Miramar Peninsula. In 1821, American settlers founded Fort Myers on the peninsula and started trading with the Indians. By 1829, Fort Myers had become known as Miracle Station because of its numerous miracles which were said to have occurred at that location including cures for scurvy, fever, arthritis, measles and yellow fever. In 1865 mirMarStation became county seat of Miami-Dade County when it was removed from Fort Myers and moved to its current site within what are now Miramar Boulevard and Northwest Seventh Street boundaries. The post office at Miracle Station continued until 1959 when it closed due to lack of customers. Miramar's first Baptist church was built in 1876 on Northeast Third Street between Northwest Second Street and Southwest First Street (now NW 5th Avenue). That same year saw the construction of a courthouse on Northwest Eighth Street which also served as a jail during prohibition years. In 1918 an elementary school called Stonington School opened in what is now northeast corner of NW Tenth Avenue and NW NinthStreet NE; this school operated until 1962 when it merged into nearby Broward Elementary School (nowBroward High School). Miramar's first grocery store opened on Northeast Fourth Street near Northeast Third Street in 1922; this store operated until 1954 when it merged into nearby Floridian Grocery Store (now Vons supermarket). By 1933 there were three churches located in Miramar: one Baptist, one Methodist Episcopal and one Catholic parish all under one roof! During World War II many people left their homes for work or military service but not everyone returned home once hostilities ended; some remained behind where they had lived while others decided to start over again such as James Pemberton who reopened his family's restaurant/bar business called "Pemberton's" on Northeast FourthStreet after serving time in prison for tax evasion during the early days of Prohibition years - Bar & Grill wasn't born yet! In 1951 Pemberton sold his business along with his entire block adjacent thereto including most of today's NE FourthStreet running from SW 8th street southwesterly through east 9th street northeasterly downNE 10th avenue eastward past NW 1st avenue then turningNNE backnorthwesterly alongNE 11th avenue until reachingSW 3rd street whereupon MPerdont stopped shortturning just beyond 12thstreetEAST towards downtownMiami while stillkeepin'VONS stretchouttoNW 2nd Streetsoutheast corner since hewasn't readytowestjustyet! They named their new community after Mount Carmel (near Lebanon), Israel which they had seen while touring that country during theTourist Board's "In America" trip in 1907-08. At first there were only a handful of residents but soon word spread about this beautiful place where you could go fishing, birding, swimming and playing polo without fear of being lynched by your neighbors - something that still happens today! Over time others decided to move here from all over Florida including Jacksonville because of its quality schools, Shopping malls and easy access to jobs in downtown Jacksonville! Miramar was founded in 1892 by a group of Spanish-Americans who wanted to establish a trading post on the Florida Keys. The Miramar Post Office was established in 1893, and served the community until 1959. In 1926, the town became part of Palm Beach County. In 1990, Miramar was amalgamated with Boca Raton into Palm Beach County.
