The first European to visit Miramar was Pedro Menéndez de Avilés on July 14, 1513 when he and his crew of six boats journeyed from Cuba to Mexico City in search of new land to explore. The fortification of key areas such as the current town started in 1824 and lasted until 1902 when it was dismantled and moved from its original location near present day Fourth Street and Cutler Avenue to what is now City Hall Square across Constitution Boulevard from Government Center Park. The fortifications were again rebuilt beginning in 1898–99 during American military occupation which ended with Spanish withdrawal from Florida that year On January 1, 1959 Miramar became an unincorporated community within Miami-Dade County when portions of Dade County were annexed into Miami-Dade County while continuing to operate as an independent municipality under its own government style During World War II many homes were built at 7th Street and Cutler Avenue for servicemen stationed there including fighter pilots who flew over Greater Miami Beach’s airport during bombing raids . Many artifacts associated with this time period are still extant in Miramar including a few airplanes owned by then mayor Solange Knowles .
