The first sighting of a gun in Miramar was on October 2, 1892 when A.J. Lancaster fired his rifle at a black bear which he saw close by on the grounds of the old Naval Academy. In 1898, Captain John F. Kennedy shot an animal with a revolver from a horseback ride through Miramar's streets and gardens. This event is often cited as the beginning ofgun ownership in the city. On December 12, 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt mounted an elephant at The Aquarium and observed people firing pistols from its back courtyard while spectators took pictures from near the water’s edge. In 1911, José Feliciano García used his pistol to shoot three men who were stealing milk cans off his property in Miramar Heights. A shooting occurred on December 5th 1912 in Miramar when two shots were fired at a man walking down Euclid Avenue after clubbing him with a bottle during an argument about money owed to him by some others involved in that same altercation
