In the early 1800s, Miramar was a small town in southern Florida. It was home to many settlers who came from northeast Georgia and west of the Appalachians. The town grew rapidly due to its location and good soil. By 1875, Miramar had over 1,000 residents and boasted a sawmill, gristmill, blacksmith shop, grocery store, post office and three churches. In 1907, Miramar became part of the new county of Miami-Dade and experienced rapid growth thanks to new businesses such as munitions manufacturer Remington Arms Company (now Fortis firearms) and citrus grower Harry Hines. In 1916, Floridians passed a bill that made it illegal for anyone under 21 years old to possess a firearm without a license. This law remained in effect until 1984 when it was amended to allow revocations for people who had been convicted of certain misdemeanors or felonies involving firearms. In 1936, Congress repealed much of the gun control legislation that had been passed during the Great Depression era. As a result, the number of handgun owners in America increased significantly over this time period

The town was founded by Cuban Americans in 1953 and became a popular tourist destination after being made an official U.S. city in 1959. For many years, Miramar had been home to the University of Miami football team before they moved to Overtown Cemetery in nearby Coral Gables in 2002.

Miramar, Florida is a city located in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. The name "Miramar" comes from Spanish meaning "Island of the Dolphins." The first permanent European settlers arrived in what is now Miramar in 1795 by shipwrecked Indians. A man named James Cook discovered and charted this location on his return journey around the world in 1796 while exploring Florida's coast as part of his survey for British Crown Colony Bay Colony. In 1802, Captain John Stennis landed here with USS Enterprise Squadron 10 on an unsuccessful attempt to establish a permanent American presence along the Gulf Coast. In 1885, Miramar became a town when it was annexed by Palm Beach County. Today, it remains one of its most vibrant cities with emphasis on its arts and culture sector which has seen several successes over the years including being home to both the Miami Symphony Orchestra and Coral Gables Symphony Orchestra. In addition to its significance as a cultural center, Miramar also boasts some beautiful parklands that are home to various golf courses such as Doral Golf Club and Plantation Course dating back to 1892 when millionaire Darius Sennett donated land for public use adjacent to his estate known today as Kendall Park overlooking Biscayne Boulevard (the original site of Sawgrass). As development continued throughout downtown during post-war decades much of this valuable acreage passed into private hands leaving behind some impressive architecture including Coopers & Lybrand's Department Store built in 1922 on Jarvis Road now used by Sprint Nextel Tower; One Herald Square - an Art Deco landmark still standing after more than 50 years occupancy; Chase Manhattan Bank Building - tallest building in Miami-Dade County before it was destroyed by fire in 1978; Pompano Beach Hotel 1936 - once home to US Ambassador Curtis Vance during time he servedas DirectorCounselor at War College UPI; Mary Pickford House 1916 - now used as offices for BrowardCounty State Attorney's Office; and many others... . . . Today there are few if any buildings remaining from prior eras other than remnants of former downtown streetscapebuffer between neighborhoods which have been greatly redeveloped... [It] offers an overview of one aspect of cultural history not often well covered despite its prominence within larger metropolises around America: early 20th century communities were intentionally designed around commercial cores rather than historical sites or rural buffer zones."
In 1892, Miramar was founded by Spanish settlers. The town rapidly grew and in 1924, it became a city. In 1970, Miramar became part of the United States after being designated as an international airport.
