Roosevelt (1929-1945), who stopped by for golf tournaments at nearby Trump National Golf Club in 1935; Hollywood movie stars like Tyrone Power (1909-1991) and Debbie Reynolds (1927-1995);and other high-profile luminaries such as Marlene Dietrich (1898-1980) and Elvis Presley (1935-1977). A number of films were shot here - notably "The Ten Commandments" (2000), "The Omen" (1976), "Ender's Game" (1995), "Brazil" (1985) - but none more prominently than MGM’s “Casablanca” which featured Ingrid Bergman (), Claude Rains () and Humphrey Bogart (). Bette Davis () also filmed her first film at this time in “Maggie” opposite Rex Harrison (). As South Florida grew increasingly Spanish speaking during World War II (), Miramar became home to many refugees from Cuba who came ashore with their belongings aboard ships seeking asylum in America. One such refugee was Isaac Asimov (), author of "War & Peace". In 1951, Asimov moved permanently to Coral Gables after fleeing Stalin's Russia; he started writing his novel there while living under security guard at Heartland Airport near downtownMiami.) Miramar also served as the setting for several movies released over the years - notably Paramount Pictures' "whose line I cross", Touchstone Pictures' "The Towering Inferno", Universal Studios' "Jaws" (#1 hit 1981)and NBCUniversal's mini series "" ("ER") which aired from 1984 to 1988
Miramar was founded in 1892 by a group of entrepreneurs who set out to create a new town on the Intercoastal Waterway. The founders were Captain George Ryder and his brother-in-law, Commodore John D. Morehead. They named their town after President George Washington and First Lady Martha Washington. The original development, which happened on the now-defunct Miramar Plantation, consisted of just a few homes and a small store. But within 12 months of its founding, Miramar had become an important community with businesses such as the American Shipbuilding Company and A&P grocery stores opening up shop. By 1907, Miramar had reached its current size with over 100 residents and 10 businesses. The late 1800s saw some major changes in Florida thanks to advancements in transportation technology including the completion of the Panama Canal which made getting food to market much easier. This also helped spur growth in Miramar with more people coming down to visit or live there permanently. In 1955, local Congressman Tom Bradshaw became the first Republican ever elected to Congress from Panama City – making him one of only a handful of Hispanics then living in Florida – and he immediately started making visits to Miramar for trade shows, economic boost, and networking opportunities. In recent years,Miramar has seen some redevelopment projects taking place such as renovation of several old homes into condos and apartments – along with plans for an airport expansion that will include an airfield capable of handling large jets – but it is still considered a very historic community with many interesting stories behind it!
