The first permanent European settlers arrived in Miramar in 1837 and named it after Major Gabriel Morrone Miramonte who had been sent from Spain to explore Florida's coast. In 1849, Captain John Stroud landed on the peninsula and named it for his friend Rear-Admiral Sir John Stroud who had sailed with His Majesty's squadron under Commodore James Cook on his first voyage around Australia in 1770-71. In 1870, Miramar became a county seat and remained so until 1934 when Gainesville took over that role. The name changed again to Miramar in 1959 when Brevard County was created from parts of Duval and Palm Beach Counties and included portions of what are now Orange County, Brevard County and Osceola County. The economy of Miramar has always depended heavily upon agriculture which produces crops such as cotton, rice, cornmeal, vegetables (including oranges), tomatoes, sweet potatoes and other vegetables; processing industries such as manufacturing engaged in textiles; tourism comprising properties used for pleasure purposes including golf courses;and retail trade conducted by independent merchants and small businesses. Miramar, Florida is a small town located in Hillsborough County, Florida. The population was 1,527 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The history of Miramar dates back to 1840 when Manuel Rodriguez set up a trading post on what is now State Road 12 in present day Miramar. By 1851, the post had been abandoned and the land sold to José Antonio Fernandez who founded the town of Fernández de la Vega on October 25th of that year. The first settler in Miramar was José Figueroa who arrived in 1853 from Cuba with his family. In 1865, Pedro Menéndez took over possession of the property from José Antonio Fernandez and established a ferry terminal at what is now US Highway 19A. In 1912, ownership changed hands multiple times until it was given to Harry Papp as part of Hurricane Andrew's damage assessment following that storm. Papp renamed it after himself which led to its current name: "Miramar". The community rapidly developed due to its location near major highways and its close proximity to phosphate mines which produced fertilizer for local farmers. Many businesses were established early on including an opera house built by Jens Hansen and opened in 1922; a grocery store by Mrs John Aiken; a hospital built by Dr John Doherty; and a movie theater called "Queen Elizabeth" which opened in 1937 just south of present day US Highway 92/9S/E (the current state road). One significant event during this time period was when World War II began and Miramar became one of several communities within Hillsborough County designated as “battle zones” where troops were stationed while fighting overseas. This gave rise to several businesses such as an armory operated by Cement Works Incorporated; gasoline stations operated by Shell Refining & Storage Company Ltd.; barber shops operated by Gerson Barber Shop Incorporated; telephone service provided by United Telephone Corporation (later Sprint) through their radiotelephone line known as "Pinellas" into homes throughout central Hillsborough County; stores selling military items such as ammunition, gasoline and other supplies managed by Consolidated Sales Service Company Ltd.; hotel rooms available for rental throughout central Hillsborough County under management of Holiday Inn Management Co., Incorporated.; plus scores more small businesses providing nightlife or services such as laundromats or doctoracies open late into the night outside many homes throughout central Hillsborough County during World War II." During the Vietnam War era, there were few jobs available for locals so much so that many people turned towards crime instead including drugs trafficking along with gunrunning activities among others which has contributed significantly to Miramonte's high crime rate today still years after the war ended although some progress has been made since then like better enforcement against these types of crimes however much work remains to be done especially since most residents are not employed outside their home country making it difficult for law enforcement officials trying To combat crime effectively . Currently there are no police officers Ron Stallings said he talks with often about patrols going around but they don't always have enough manpower
Miramar was founded in 1885 by two brothers, James and John Miramar. The first store was built on the corner of State Road A1A and Indian River Boulevard. In 1895, the Miramar post office was established with a mail call from the home of Wm. H. Burch at 5595 South United States Highway 1. In 1899, the Miramar Baptist Church was organized with Reverend J.C. Huffaker as its first pastor. In 1927, the town became a city when it annexed neighboring Clearwater Beach; however, it reverted to its original name in 1951 when it became part of Miami-Dade County
