In the early 1800s, firearms were a popular choice for law enforcement in Miramar. The area was then known as "The Gold Coast" because of its rich gold deposits. Smith and Wesson handguns were first manufactured here in 1838. During the American Revolution, the Miramar Militia was composed of volunteer militiamen from nearby Key West. They helped care for British troops stationed at Fort Mims until they evacuated in 1783. After the Revolutionary War ended, Miramar became a center of trade with key items such as sugar and tobacco being transported here by sea or land. This prosperity allowed for the construction of many homes and businesses along Gulf Boulevard between 1820-1830. One of these businesses was J H & Sons Auctioneers which operated from 1833-1957 on Broadway near Indianola Avenue. In 1893, Tomás de la Torre y Escobar purchased this property and built his current building next door to JH&S Auctioneers which still stands today (although it is not used as an auction house). After purchasing JH&S Auctioneer's building, de la Torre began manufacturing firearms including rifles, shotguns, pistols and revolvers under his own name starting in 1895. This success led to him opening another business called La Candelaria Arms Company Ltd., which produced firearms until World War II when it merged into Browning Firearms Corporation. Miramar is a small town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,907 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first European to visit Miramar was Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513 on his trip from Cuba to find a new land to exploit and claim for Spain. De Leon's ships reached Miramar Bay on September 7, 1513 and anchored off the present day site of Miramar Beach. Spanish explorer Ruy López de Villalobos also landed here in 1521 on his way southward from Panama City after discovering the New World. The Town of Miramar was incorporated on November 12, 1892 by Dr. John Burtis and Wm. Hays Fenton as a result of an act of the state Legislature passed November 5th following the election of members to fill vacancies caused bydeaths or resignation from office in that year among its citizens over seventy-five years old inclusive.. At first it consisted only of about thirty people who leased lots on three streets within what is now downtown Miramar beach; but soon other settlers arrived and before long there were several hundred people living here scattered throughout various parts of town . In 1907 Hurricane Milton destroyed mostof downtown Miramar with damage estimated at $150,000 with little hope that it could be rebuilt . But thanks to leadership from Mayor Harry Siegel and businesspeople such as Jules Blanchard (founderof Citrus Heights Mall) and Dolph Lundgren (founderof Shoe Mart),Miramar emerged as one of Duval County's most promising communities during the Great Depression when many other towns declined due to lack Of capital or entrepreneurism A few years later Mayor Siegel announced plans for a brand new city hall which would replaced aging facilities in DowntownDuval County Municipal building .. The new city hall was completed in 1932 and included a large garage used exclusively by firemen which housed both the municipal water system (now known as American Water)and two electric lights . Nearby were two small farmers markets where fresh produce was sold direct to customers without going through stores
